Decentralized Privacy-Preserving Proximity Tracing (DP-3T)

August 13, 2020

The Decentralized privacy-proximity tracing (DP-3T) is an open protocol built in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to allow the remote monitoring of infected participants.

The protocol, such as the competing Pan-European Privacy-Preserving Proximity Tracing (PEPP-PT) protocol, uses Bluetooth Low Energy to track and record interactions with other users.

The protocols vary in their reporting method, with PEPP-3T requiring clients to upload contact logs to a central reporting server, while with DP-3T, the central reporting server never has access to contact logs, nor is it responsible for storing and informing contact clients.

The infogram depicts the process of the DP-3T paradigm, which was adopted in Malta through the COVIDAlert Project.
